In space terms, "Close" can mean millions of kilometers. However, some objects pass closer than the Moon (384,400 km). Check the Distance column to see exactly how far away they are.
What happens if an asteroid hits Earth?
Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere. However, objects larger than 140 meters can cause significant regional damage. This is why NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office monitors the sky 24/7.
